Most traders don't read the rulebook. So they have no chance at all. The rulebook is what matters the most. Prop firm trading is totally different from trading your own account: prop firm trading means you get paid to survive — controlled downside risks, small positions, a positive risk:return.
The main mistake traders make when signing up for a prop firm is comparing the payouts — and the firm that pays more is "the best". That's not how prop firm trading works. The most important thing is how high the probability is to receive a payout at all.
Prop firms make money when traders lose their accounts. High risks and high drawdowns make the profits — for the firm. For the trader this means: low risk and low downside create survival and payouts. Maximum performance is not the aim.
| Prop Firm | Primary Market | Challenge Price ($50k Account) | Profit Split (Trader / Firm) | Max Daily Drawdown | Overall Drawdown | Minimum Trading Days |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| FTMO | Forex, CFDs, Indices | ~$370 one-time (refunded on pass) | 80–90% (scales up with performance) | 5% (static, based on starting daily balance) | 10% static (fixed to initial account balance) | 4 days (indefinite total time) |
| Topstep | Futures only | ~$49–$149 / mo (subscription) | 100% of first $10k, then 90/10 | None (removed daily loss limit in the Trading Combine) | $2,000 (~4%) trailing / EOD | 5 winning days (min. $200 gain per day) |
| Apex Trader Funding | Futures only | ~$147–$397 / mo (frequent 80% sales) | 100% of first $25k, then 90/10 | None (no explicit daily limit) | $2,500 (~5%) intraday trailing (high-water mark) | 7 days (1-phase evaluation) |
| FundedNext (Stellar 2-Step) | Forex, CFDs, Indices | ~$299 one-time (fully refunded) | 80–90% (+ pays 15% bonus on evaluation profit) | 5% (balance-based, daily reset) | 10% static (non-trailing) | 5 days |
Challenge prices for a $50,000 account. Rules and prices are the firms' published terms as of September 2026 — always re-read the rulebook before you buy in.
A $5,000–$6,000 account makes even tiny positions too big — a little market movement hits the 5% / $250 knockout drawdown. Add a cheap buy-in with no skin in the game and gambling replaces discipline. Plus: are $20–$40 accounts really cheap, or does the fine print add a $100 activation fee?
Open the small-accounts analysis →For futures only two firms really matter. Static vs EOD-trailing drawdown, one-time vs monthly fees, profit splits, platforms, evaluation payouts — and why Topstep's overnight ban (close before 4:10 PM EST) is the deciding rule: pure intraday futures trading is the hardest game in town.
Open the futures head-to-head →The trader needs to understand how the prop firm makes money: traders buying in and getting knocked out — losing their account — through drawdowns. That is the business model.
If the max drawdown is calculated intraday, a trader can lose the account even in a winning trade: a spike generates a high profit, the high-water mark gets raised, the profit drops back — and the account is lost. The trade might still be profitable and the account balance positive, but the intraday raise of the high-water mark in combination with a quick drop of open profits can still demolish the account — and the buy-in is lost.
FundedNext Stellar 2 offers a static max drawdown (non-trailing). This means if you win $1,000, your static knock-out level moves $1,000 further away — so you get a security buffer with every positive trade, and that buffer increases the probability of survival and payouts.
FTMO and FundedNext offer the best probabilities for CFD traders to keep the account and receive payouts — with the caveat that the trader still loses the account when the defined max loss is reached intraday.
