Broker Costs

Broker Fee Savings: What Switching — and Slowing Down — Really Saves

Cutting your broker bill is the easy lever: on a $2,000 account running 20 trades a month, moving from premium pricing to a competitive low-cost broker is easily worth $100+ per month. But the bigger lever is your own trade count. Run the numbers below with the same trader in every scenario — a 66.6% win rate at 1:1 risk/reward — and watch costs explode as trade count rises while profit shrinks. Fewer, slower, bigger trades win even though they pay more overnight financing. Most traders find they are leaving 30–40% of their potential gains on the table.

Two levers: your broker, and your trade count

  • Lever one is the broker: the same 20 trades cost roughly $145 a month on the Saxo fee base (August 2026 sample data) but about $35 on a competitive low-cost broker. That saving alone is worth more than many small accounts make in a good month.
  • Lever two is you: every additional trade pays the full fee stack again — spread, minimum commission, financing — while slicing your fixed capital into smaller positions. The calculator below shows what that does to a profitable trader.
  • The two levers multiply: a cheaper broker makes every trade count less against you, and fewer executions make every trade bigger. Work both and the same edge produces a completely different bottom line.
  • Start with the broker table to see your monthly saving, then scroll to the overtrading calculator to see what your trade count is really costing you.

Defaults are the Saxo sample month from the fee breakdown — the per-trade all-in cost (spread + commission + one overnight of financing) at your current broker, next to what a competitive low-cost broker charges for the same trade. Edit the trade counts to match your style and overwrite the per-trade costs with your broker's real numbers.

With the default trade counts, switching alone is worth roughly $106.20 per month — real money on a $2,000 account. But notice what the table is really telling you: the more trades you run, the more both brokers cost you. Which raises the bigger question — how many trades should you be running at all? That is the calculator below.

Your strategy is the bigger lever

  • The model uses one trader in every scenario: 66.6% win rate at 1:1 risk/reward — two wins for every loss, a real and sustainable-sounding edge. The whole account is deployed across the month's trades, so more trades means smaller trades: at 20 trades each gets $100 of margin, at 4 trades each gets $500.
  • This asset class has one special feature: at 20 trades a month the strategy produces a 3% gross monthly gain — a profitable trader before costs.
  • Fewer trades are held longer, and a trade held four times as long captures roughly twice the move — price movement scales with the square root of time. Bigger positions on bigger moves is where slower trading earns its keep.
  • The costs are the Saxo fee base: 0.6 pip spread, a $6 minimum round-trip FX commission per trade, and overnight financing for every night held. The minimum commission is the quiet killer: a $100-margin trade pays the same $6 as a $500-margin trade.

Overtrading calculator: 3 to 60 trades a month

Same trader in every scenario: 66.6% win rate at 1:1 risk/reward, whole account deployed across the month's trades — so more trades means smaller trades. Fewer trades are held longer and capture bigger moves. The fee base is Saxo (August 2026): 0.6 pip spread, $6 minimum round-trip FX commission, overnight financing per night held. Slide the trade count and watch what happens to your net.

Costs have eaten your entire edge. Your best pace on the Saxo fee base is about 4 trades a month → $15.66 net. At 20 trades you keep -$88.50 — you leave $104.16 (more than 100% of your potential net) on the table, paid away in commissions, spreads and financing on executions your edge never needed.

Illustrative model, not a prediction or financial advice. Calibration: 20 trades a month produce a 3% gross monthly gain on the deployed account (66.6% win rate, 1:1 R:R); per-trade margin = account / N at 100:1 EUR/USD notional; move captured scales with the square root of holding time; nights ≈ 20 / N; Saxo per-trade costs (August 2026 sample data): 0.6 pip spread, $6 minimum round-trip commission, 0.00825%/night financing — low-cost preset: 0.2 pip-equivalent, $0.70 commission, 0.0033%/night. Swap totals rise as you trade less (longer holds); the calculator keeps them in the model on purpose.

Why fewer, bigger trades win — even though you pay more swap

  • Yes — the calculator keeps the swap honest: fewer trades means longer holds, and total overnight financing actually RISES as trade count falls. At 3 trades a month you pay roughly seven times the swap of 20 trades a month.
  • The net is still higher: the captured move grows with the square root of holding time while swap drag grows only linearly — and every trade you remove deletes a $6 minimum commission and a full spread.
  • There is a genuine overtrading threshold: past roughly a handful of trades a month on premium pricing, costs grow faster than the edge. At 20 trades the 3% gross gain is already gone — the account is net negative. At 60 trades the fee stack eats more than five times the entire edge.
  • The optimum is not one monster trade: go too slow and overnight financing starts overtaking the gains too. The sweet spot on this fee base is a few concentrated, multi-day trades a month — bigger size, fewer executions, swap paid and still ahead.
  • Switch the calculator to the low-cost broker preset and the same shape appears, shifted: overtrading still hurts, but a disciplined pace turns the 3% edge into real net profit rather than a broker donation.

See what you leave on the table: replay your trades

  • Numbers persuade; replays convince. The simulator lets you replay your own trades on real historical charts and watch the exact moments where profit leaked away — the early exit, the oversized loss, the trade that never needed to happen.
  • Most traders who replay a full month find 30–40% of their potential gains were left on the table: exits too early, sizes too small, executions too many. That is usually more than any broker switch saves.
  • Run your current style untouched, then run the slowed-down version — fewer trades, bigger size, longer holds — and compare the two equity curves on identical markets. The difference is your overtrading tax, measured.
  • Use the simulator first, with zero fees, to find your true edge; then use this page to price that edge against real broker costs before you take it live.

Frequently asked questions

How much can I save by switching to a lower-cost broker?+

In the example on this page — 20 trades a month on a $2,000 account — switching from the Saxo fee base (August 2026 sample data) to a competitive low-cost broker saves roughly $105 per month, about $1,270 a year. Your saving depends on your trade count and instruments: edit the table to match your own style and pricing.

Is fewer trades always better?+

No. Fewer, bigger, longer-held trades win on this fee base because the captured move grows faster than the costs — but total overnight financing rises as holds lengthen, and at very low trade counts swap starts eating the advantage. The sweet spot here is a few concentrated multi-day trades a month, not one monster position held for weeks.

Why do smaller trades cost proportionally more?+

Because of minimum fees. The FX round-trip commission is a $6 minimum whether the position behind it uses $100 of margin or $500. Splitting a fixed account over more trades multiplies those minimums while the edge per trade shrinks — the definition of overtrading costs.

What does "leaving 30–40% on the table" mean?+

Compared with the best pace for the same edge, an overtrading month captures only a fraction of the achievable net — at 10 trades a month on low-cost pricing you still forgo roughly 40% of what your edge could produce; on premium pricing at 20+ trades you forgo all of it and more. Replaying your trades in the simulator shows the same leak in your own executions.

Does this calculator use real broker fees?+

It uses the published Saxo pricing sample from our Real Broker Fees breakdown (August 2026): 0.6 pip EUR/USD spread, $6 minimum round-trip FX commission, overnight financing per night held. The low-cost preset represents typical competitive pricing. All values are illustrative — not a prediction, and not financial advice.
