Forex Simulator: Learn Leverage, Margin and Swap Without Losing a Cent

A forex simulator lets you trade real historical currency pairs with a virtual balance — so you learn the three things that actually blow up forex accounts before they cost you money: the small, range-bound way forex moves, the 100:1-to-300:1 leverage brokers hand you, and the nightly swap cost of holding a position.

How the forex market actually moves

  • Forex majors move in pips, not percentage points: a normal EUR/USD day spans roughly 50–80 pips — about half a percent.
  • You will almost never see the 4–5% single-day moves that stocks and crypto regularly print; forex moves are small, slow and range-bound.
  • Because pairs oscillate around interest-rate fair value most of the time, range trading — buying tested support, selling tested resistance — is the natural forex style, not trend chasing.
  • The small moves are exactly why brokers offer extreme leverage: 100:1 is how a 0.5% day becomes a 50% day for your margin. That is the trap.

The leverage brokers offer — normally 100:1, sometimes 300:1

  • Retail forex brokers typically advertise leverage around 100:1, and some offshore brokers go as high as 300:1.
  • At 100:1, a 1% move against you erases your entire posted margin. At 300:1, a 0.33% move — about 35 pips — does the same.
  • EU-regulated brokers cap retail leverage at 30:1. That cap is a survival feature, not a handicap — regulators put it there after too many accounts vanished.
  • Advertised leverage is a maximum, never a recommendation. Use the calculator below to see exactly how each level eats your margin.

Start with 20:1 or 30:1 — survival is the strategy

  • Begin at 20:1 or 30:1. Your first year of forex is about surviving long enough for an edge to matter, not about maximizing returns.
  • Survival math: at 30:1, wiping your margin takes roughly a 3.3% move against you — an unusually large, survivable shock. At 200:1 it takes 50 pips, one average session.
  • Low leverage buys you the time to be wrong, learn, and stay in the game — the only account that can compound is one that still exists.
  • Practice it: pick a forex pair in the simulator, keep leverage at 20:1–30:1, and trade the range edges with a virtual balance.

Swap points: the nightly roll cost most traders never count

  • Hold a forex position overnight and you pay (or receive) swap — the interest-rate differential between the two currencies, charged as a daily roll.
  • Example: many brokers charge roughly $7.50 per night to hold 1 lot EUR/USD long. That is about $225 a month — before a single pip moves your way.
  • That $225 equals 22.5 pips the market must hand you just to break even — more than the average winner of many short-term forex traders.
  • Most brokers book a triple swap on Wednesday to cover the weekend, so one night each week costs you three.
  • Holding through weeks of roll is how "I was right eventually" still loses money. Test multi-day holds in the simulator, where the roll cannot eat a real account.

Frequently asked questions

How much leverage should a forex beginner use?+

20:1 or 30:1 at most. At 30:1 you need roughly a 330-pip adverse move to lose your whole margin — an extreme, survivable event. At 200:1 one normal session can finish you. Survival first, returns later.

How much does swap cost on 1 lot EUR/USD?+

It varies by broker and by the interest-rate differential, but charges around $7.50 per night are common — roughly $225 a month to hold one lot, with a triple charge on Wednesdays. That is a real nightly cost many traders never account for.

Why do forex pairs move so little compared to stocks?+

Currencies are anchored by interest-rate differentials in the largest, most liquid market in the world, so big dislocations are rare. Half a percent is a big forex day — which is precisely why leverage is so dangerous.
