What this setup looks like
- Range Trading applied to a sideways market means ranking the strongest and weakest names, then trading the continuation — not the initial panic move.
- In a sideways market, relative strength still leads; the strongest (weakest) keep leading on the way down as well as up.
Why it is hard
- False breakouts trap momentum buyers at the worst price.
- There is no trend to lean on, so conviction is lower.
- Whipsaw kills trend-following systems one cut at a time.
- Boredom inside the range leads to overtrading.
- Holding range positions through a confirmed breakout.
- Trading a "range" that does not really have clean edges.
A practical approach
- Map clear, tested support and resistance first.
- Buy the floor, sell the ceiling — skip the middle.
- Cut fast on a confirmed break of the level.
- Take profit before the edge, not at it.
- Buy support and sell resistance — fade the edges, skip the middle.
- Cut breakout attempts fast the moment they fail.
- Take partial profits at the range mid.
- Shrink size as the range narrows — breakouts are coming.
Mistakes that blow accounts
- Holding range positions through a confirmed breakout.
- Trading a "range" that does not actually have clean edges.
- Fading every move instead of only the extremes.
- Ignoring a shrinking range that is about to break.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know a range will hold?+
You do not — you manage the break, not predict it. A clean range with multiple tested edges is tradeable until price proves it is not, at which point you cut.
Should I trade breakouts in a sideways market?+
Most sideways-market breakouts fail. If you trade them, size smaller, demand confirmation, and exit the moment price reclaims the level.
How is range trading different from breakout trading?+
They are opposites. Range traders fade the edges and bet the level holds; breakout traders bet the level breaks. Each is right in its own regime.
